Excerpts from student journals:
Last time at the Bimathlon we saw how many drops of water we could fit on the head of a penny. My partner was Brittni and we got a max of 157 drops. After that we recorded the data of our three tries into a spreadsheet on the computers, which automatically found the average. It was really fun.
While I was doing this BiMathlon I learned a lot along with having fun, but my favorite thing while I was doing it was the Drops on a Penny activity. I really liked it because it was fun to find out how many drops you could actually put on the face of a penny. After everyone found how many drops they could get on their penny, we found the average of everyone’s drops. I found that even though you have a high number your average could still be low compared to the other people in the class. I also found that the slower and steadier your hand is you can get more drops on the penny.
In our first BiMathlon day at the Sonoma County Office of Education, we tried an experiment with pennies. First, we estimated how many drops of water a penny could hold. (We used an eyedropper.) Then we dropped the water on the penny and wrote down our evaluation of the experiment. Next, we typed the information on the computer and observed what the other people recorded. Finally, we saw who had the best estimation with their pennies.
